Built in the memory of Sultan Selim I the Resolute, the first Ottoman Turkish origin Caliph of Islam, Ceaser of Rome, Khagan of the Two Seas and Lands, who conquered the entire middle east in the span of 8 years and secured the cities of Mecca and Media and Jerusalem (may Allah shed a light to his tomb) by his successor son Suleyman I the Magnificent during the 1520s.
Yavuz Selim Mosque offers a different view amongst 7 selatin mosques of Istanbul. It is the most elegant, most humble amongst them all. Thus the mosque, how it is designed and built, resembles Sultan Selim himself and how he preferred to live, as he avoided fancy and lived humbly.
The mosque’s 16th century architecture is awe-inspiring, with its grand dome and intricate tile work. The peaceful atmosphere inside make it a perfect place for reflection and escape, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The views from the terrace overlooking the Golden Horn are breathtaking, especially during sunset.
The surrounding area is equally charming, with narrow streets and historic buildings that take you back in time. There’s a small park nearby where you can sit and enjoy the serenity after visiting the mosque. The locals are friendly, and there’s a genuine sense of community in the area.
If you’re in Istanbul, I highly recommend taking the time to visit Yavuz Selim Mosque. It’s not just a place of worship but also a beautiful landmark that offers a glimpse into the Istanbul's rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a peaceful spot, this mosque has something to offer.
The cathedral’s grandeur and stunning architecture are a testament to its historical and cultural significance. As soon as you walk in, you are enveloped by the serene ambiance and the exquisite beauty of the stained glass windows and intricate carvings. It’s a place where you can truly feel the weight of history and spirituality. The cathedral grounds are equally impressive, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The well-manicured gardens and tranquil atmosphere make it a perfect spot for quiet contemplation or a leisurely stroll. The staff and clergy were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, providing fascinating insights into the cathedral’s rich history and significance. One of the highlights of my visit was attending a service, which was a deeply moving experience. The sense of community and tradition within the walls of Saint George Cathedral is palpable. Whether you are there for worship, to admire the art and architecture, or simply to find a moment of peace, this cathedral is a must-visit. Highly recommended for anyone exploring the spiritual and cultural heritage of the area.
