Monastiraki Flea Market
2024 Mar 03
One of the most interesting and vibrant places you must visit during your stay in Athens is the Flea Market in Monastiraki.
It is not really a flea market except on Sundays when some of the stores close and people bring tables and carpets and sell all kinds of stuff from useless junk to antiques.
You have to get here early because after about 12 the crowd becomes impossible and if you want to take a break it's difficult to find available table at the many cafes and restaurants in the area.
Since ancient times, the wider area around Monastiraki hosted the central commercial and economic traffic of the city. Thus, during the Archaic times there was the Ancient Market, during the Roman times the Roman market, while during the Frankish and Turkish times the Staropazaro and the Old Market on Mitropoleos Street

Bridge of Otto

Otto’s bridge
Across the street from the Artemis temple, but well-hidden as it is virtually buried under concrete and unmarked, there is a three-arched stone bridge dating back to the days of Otto, the first King of Greece (1832-1862). The bridge is located on the intersection of Ardittou and Athanasiou Diakou str. where the only stretch of the ancient river Ilissos' bank is still visible abovegound. Just look for the steps towards the Temple of Olympian Zeus and climb down into the greenery.

Well preserved magnificent structure, located at the foot of the Acropolis, still in use.
