National Theatre
2023 Dec 30
I go to see almost everything at the National theater. This is a bit of a risk as I've seen some very duff productions there but these are in a minority and most of the plays I've seen there have been good or outstanding. The most recent production I saw was the Nationals big Christmas presentation of The Witches. This is a big brash exuberant production with some very large scale musical numbers. However, I have to say it left me a little cold. But then I think the show is aimed principally at children. So I am probably not the appropriate target audience to comment
Greyfriars Kirk
2023 Oct 04
Most famous of course for being the burial place of the famous Bobby and his police officer owner. But the Kirk is also beautiful in its own right and well worth a look. Entrance is free but donations are requested. The Kirk has a small museum.
Art gallery situated at level 2: within the Barbican centre and laid out over 2 floors. Note that you can enter the gallery from Frobisher Crescent rather than descending to the lakeside entrances and having to come back up again. The gallery hosts themed exhibitions. This is paid entry unless you are a Barbican member. Most of the exhibitions are worth catching although they can be a little esoteric and eclectic. As at March 2022 the exhibition is Postwar Modern - New Art in Britain 1945 to 1963. Many of the pieces deal with the destruction caused by the war and subsequent reconstruction. All photos are from this exhibition.
The church like most churches is free to visit. The church interior is quite extraordinary - it's been given effectively an ultra-modern make over which is not hinted at by the rather austere exterior. The stained glass windows are particularly lovely. The church is in central Stuttgart close the the indoor market.
One of the 20c architectural highlights of Stuttgart - the town hall. It's hard to pin down the exact architectural style - partly art deco with some strangely brutalist elements.
