Boothby Square
2024 Jun 25
Very interesting street, park and business/commercial section. The square was named after the former Mayor of Portland Frederic E. Boothby, who served as mayor from 1901-1904. The cobblestone street, which is open to vehicles, reminds me of a small street in Norwich, England that used to have cobblestones and was used in an episode of Monty Python. The cobblestones are at the end of Fore Street and take on a circular pattern at the Silver Street intersection. Watching an SUV with a Vermont license plate 🍽️ and the driver sticking his head out the window while watching the road was interesting.
The little park in the center of the square ⬜ is a good place to sit 🪑 and enjoy a cup of coffee ☕. The watering trough was dedicated to Adelaide, Frederic Boothby's wife, for her philanthropy.
Boothby Square ⬛ has its own Wikipedia page 📄. Exploring the square added to my enjoyment of exploring the city 🏙️🌆 of Portland.
Google Maps takes you to the wrong location. Google Maps takes you to the wrong street and expects you to walk through someone's yard and a small woods to get to the maple 🍁 shack.
There is a sign at the end of their driveway and you can see 🙈 the shack from the road.
The owner has tried multiple times to correct the location. He even called Google and he was told they will fix it.
I visited during NH Maple 🍁 Syrup Weekend and I had fun 😊! I was greeted by their rescue dog 🐕 Rustus, a seven year old Beagle/Labrador mix from Mississippi. He followed me until someone else arrived.
The owner answered all of my questions and told me of the history of the farm. I had a great time talking with him and learning about the making of maple syrup. I learned even more since my visit to other maple syrup shacks.
I tasted a sample of the syrup and it had a Carmel taste even though no flavoring was added.
Cash and Venmo only. They also sell 🥚 eggs.
I was told that this years season is ending early but you can still purchase syrup.
I recommend this business and if you visit, say hello to Rustus!
Stewart Park

I came across this park 🏞️ while visiting the Laconia Pumpkin Festival. The park was decorated with lights and flowers. It sits next to the Winnipesaukee River. It has a loop ➰ trail that connects to a riverfront trail.
The park is named after Paul Steward. He was a founding member and chairman of the Laconia Housing and Development Authority. He died at age 50 in 1973. A few months later, this park was named in his honor. The park was rededicated in June 2011.
It is a cute little park which I hope to explore more of when I walk the riverfront Trail, hopefully with my kids! There is a parking garage nearby and it is part of downtown Laconia.
Avalanche Falls

With the recent rain 🌧️, the Falls are magnificent to look at. It is not Niagara Falls, but it adds to Flume Gorge and helped make my visit more memorable.
You can view the Falls from the 🔝 top. I was surprised by how much green grows around the Falls and the Flume.
Located next to the Fox Run Mall, it consists of active businesses, Savers and Jo Ann Fabrics, closed businesses, Party City, smaller independent offices and current redevelopment.
I have visited Savers and it is a good place to browse and shop used clothing, toys, decorative items, books 📚 and movies. I like to browse the book section while my daughter looks through the movies.
