We were lucky enough to be here for the annual parade of the icon and all the ceremony that goes with it. We were made very welcome. This is an ornate place of worship.
St. Peter's seems to have at least 12 centuries of presence at its present location with a history that may date back as far as the 4th century.
You will see a very tall, 70 metre bell tower of Medieval origins, a 17th-century Baroque facade as well as a Romanesque style barrel vault interior with an expansive 25-metre tall centre nave and narrower 5-metre tall side naves lined with chapels where you can view nice altarpieces, artworks, sculptures and frescos.
I particularly enjoyed the sculptural series called the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Alfonso Lombardi (1522-26).
