The exhibitions were good, but the building, once one of the most charming museums I knew, kind of lost its soul after the very brutal, modernist renovation that in my opinion was done with a lack of consideration and respect for the traditional culture the building is all about.
I am an archaeology and heritage professional in the UK and have visited this museum numerous times over the last 30 years. It has a really outstanding collection of Chinese Bronze Age artefacts, Neolithic jade artefacts and Tang and earlier pottery. That is (or was) the museum's strength (along with Buddist statuary, still on display).
The museum was refurbished in 2023. This was not an improvement and is presumably down to an unfortunate change in museum leadership. There is now only a small selection of such artefacts being exhibited, with much open space that was previously well utilised with fantastic displays.
To my disappointment (I hesitate to say anger) many exhibits comprised mediocre recent paintings. This is not an art gallery but a museum with an outstanding collection of artefacts that should be shared!
The cafe on the top floor previously had much character, with views overlooking the Botanical Gardens and lotus pond, a prime reason for wanting to take a break here, but has now been replaced by a soulless place without windows!
The museum's management needs to admit that they got it wrong and to reinstate its previous displays. They could also look to the refurbished National Taiwan Museum nearby on Xianyang Road for inspiration on how to create engaging mixed media displays. The refurbishment of that place was an improvement, not a giant leap backward.

Museum has renovated. Personally I feel it's small and not too many artifacts towards to historical museum. The 4th floor is completely all restaurant. It's a pity.
New renovated, nice exhibition, nice place. Have a restaurant. The botanical garden is beside the museum, good to visit both places.
Was expecting so much more. The exhibits were mostly scrolls and one room of antiques of which I have seen more in antique stores in Hong Kong and friends houses.

I can understand the explanation for that, but it was maybe a bit too much calligraphy. (Yes, I know that it was to depict the evolution of the style of that artist).
Else I really enjoyed it. Interesting to see similarities to Japanese art (known from my previous knowledge).

Good mixture of history and art. The museum is recently renovated and just reopened. Less than $2 to enter, it is well worth your time. It’s not too big and it sits adjacent to the botanical gardens and other beautiful buildings I also highly recommend the Lotus restaurant on the 4th floor. Delicious food and very good prices!!
